A marvelous introduction for the public, the CD is also a useful resource for teachers, students and researchers in the lead-up to the 200th birthday of the signing of the Louisiana Purchase Dec. 20. The gargantuan deal doubled the size of a young America. Over 800,000 square miles, purchased for about four cents an acre, would later become all or part of 15 American states: Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana.
“The Louisiana Purchase Multimedia Timeline Education Project is a collective endeavor of archives, museums, libraries and independent scholars, united by their zeal for education and their readiness to share resources and knowledge,” said Frey, a renowned colonial historian and founding director of the Deep South Regional Humanities Center.
The CD, published by DSRHC/Tulane, designed by Popefish Digital Design in New Orleans, and distributed by LSU Press, is divided into three sections:
• 1803-04 – Reshaping the Atlantic World with – artist Jacob Lawrence’s colorful images of Toussaint L’Ouverture and St. Domingue – context and views of the world’s first black republic – raising the American flag in New Orleans on Dec. 20, 1803 – the U.S. Senate’s debate on the treaty – slave baptisms • 1804-1820
